On Tuesday, May 28th, golden confetti rained over NBC’s America’s Got Talent stage as Gabrielle Union pressed the Golden Buzzer. Her reaction came after hearing a tear-jerking performance of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song For You,” by Kodi Lee, a 22-year-old singer and piano player. Lee also has autism and is blind. His mother, who accompanied him on stage, told the crowd, “Through music and performing he was able to withstand living in this world because when you’re autistic it’s really hard to do what everybody else does. It actually has saved his life, playing music.”

His performance dropped jaws – both of the judges’ and the audience’s. Lee’s deep and soulful voice and skill on the piano impressed everyone watching. After his performance, he received a standing ovation with several faces in the audience seen wiping tears away.

Judge Julianne Hough told Lee, “I feel your heart, your passion – your voice blew all of us away, and I just wanna say, I heard you and I felt you and that was beautiful.”

Judge Simon Cowell, who is known for being harsh and straight to the point, noted, “Your voice is absolutely fantastic,” and went on to say, “I’m gonna remember this moment for the rest of my life.”

The show’s newest Judge, Gabrielle Union, remarked the hardships of being a mother, but the ultimate reward of it. She stated, “You just want to give your kids the moon, the stars, and the rainbows, and tonight, I’m gonna give you something special,” just before pressing the Golden Buzzer. In an exclusive video for AGT, Union explained why she gave Lee the honor of the Golden Buzzer. About his song choice, she said, “I’ve never seen anyone nail it the way that Kodi did.” Union was saving the Golden Buzzer for a performer that was going to change the world, in her eyes. She believes that Kodi is that performer. The
